The essentials

How should a culture result be read?

The short answer

A culture looks for bacterial growth in a specimen. Blood, urine, stool and throat samples answer different clinical questions. Read the specimen type and collection time with the result.

What does the test show?

Interpret a positive result with the identified organism and symptoms. Susceptibility testing indicates which antibiotics may work in the laboratory; it is not a prescription by itself.

Clinical assessment note

Report antibiotics taken before sampling and the collection circumstances. Do not start treatment based only on the words “growth detected”.
