Adenovirus
Respiratory infection, conjunctivitis and gastroenteritis
The short answer
Adenovirus is not one disease. Different types can be associated with respiratory, eye or intestinal illness.
Transmission and timing
Close contact, respiratory particles, surfaces and stool can transmit infection. Inadequately disinfected pools have been linked to some outbreaks.
CDC ↗Symptoms and risk groups
Fever, sore throat, cough, red eyes or diarrhoea may occur. None establishes adenovirus as the cause on its own.
CDC ↗When to seek help
Severe breathing difficulty or marked deterioration needs urgent assessment. Seek assessment earlier with immune suppression or underlying heart or lung disease.
CDC ↗For life-threatening symptoms, severe breathing difficulty or altered consciousness, call your local emergency number (112 in Türkiye).
What does the test show?
A positive test does not prove adenovirus explains every symptom. It may be detectable without symptoms or for a prolonged period after recovery.
CDC ↗Care and treatment approach
Most mild infections receive supportive care. The absence of a generally approved specific treatment does not remove the need for specialist assessment in severe illness.
CDC ↗Prevention and everyday life
Hand hygiene and suitable surface disinfection matter. Clusters of eye infection require attention to shared equipment and contact chains.
CDC ↗Clinical assessment note
Choose infection-control precautions for the clinical syndrome. The vaccine used for US military personnel is not a routine vaccine available to the general public.
CDC ↗Bring a question to your appointment
Does the positive test explain my current symptoms?
International evidence, local decisions
Each source’s country is identified. Vaccine access, reimbursement, isolation and reporting rules vary. Use current guidance and your clinician’s advice in your country; English does not imply UK or US eligibility.
