6 patients with ichthyosis from Rize and Istanbul: the skin disease may also affect immunity

Peer-reviewed publication

A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.

In Rize and Istanbul, 6 patients with ichthyosis due to the ALOX12B gene were studied. The patients came from three families with consanguineous (blood-relative) marriages. Five patients had recurrent bacterial or fungal infections. Four patients had very high IgE levels. One new gene change was found.

What does it mean for patients and families?

Immune tests may be requested for children with ichthyosis who get frequent infections. Dermatologists, immunologists and geneticists should follow these children together. This is a very small study.
