7 patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease at Hacettepe: sleep problems may be an early sign
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
At Hacettepe University, the sleep recordings of 7 people with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were studied. Only three of them had said they had a sleep problem. But when asked carefully, all of them turned out to have sleep problems. Pauses in breathing during sleep and insomnia were common findings.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This is a very small study. Still, if new sleep problems appear together with rapidly progressing forgetfulness, telling the doctor about them may help with diagnosis.
