Europe's Screen4Care project sets a 245-gene list for newborn genetic screening
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
The EU-funded Screen4Care project published the 245-gene TREAT panel, to be used in newborn genetic screening, in the Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases. The genes were selected using criteria such as treatability, age of onset and severity. The panel will be tested in about 20,000 babies in Italy, Germany and France.
What does it mean for patients and families?
A scientific basis for genetic newborn screening is forming in Europe. This basis concerns which diseases the screening will cover.
