Genetic childhood dystonia in Türkiye: 26 genes found in 81 children, 7 with the DYT1 gene
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
In Türkiye, 81 children from 19 centers were studied. In all of them, a genetic cause of dystonia had been found. In total, 26 different genes were identified. The TOR1A gene, known as DYT1, was present in 7 children. The genetic diagnosis changed treatment in 60% of the children. Treatments targeting the cause were found to be more effective.
What does it mean for patients and families?
In a child with dystonia, genetic testing can guide treatment. However, this is a retrospective study, looking back at past records. Testing and treatment decisions are made with a pediatric neurologist.
