In Hunter syndrome, siblings who started enzyme therapy in infancy did better
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Records of 19 sibling pairs with Hunter syndrome were compared. In each pair, one sibling started enzyme therapy before the age of one and the other later. Those who started early had better growth in height. Their liver, heart, joint and muscle findings were also milder. However, surgery and heart valve problems were recorded more often in the early group.
What does it mean for patients and families?
In babies whose sibling has Hunter syndrome, early testing and early treatment may be important. When to start treatment is decided with a metabolic specialist.
