17 children with ARPKD in Istanbul: kidneys fail earlier in those with early symptoms
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
At Marmara University, 17 children diagnosed with ARPKD were studied. In those diagnosed before birth or in the first month, 5-year kidney survival was 71.4%. In those diagnosed later, this rate was 100%. Kidney function was lower in children with severe gene changes.
What does it mean for patients and families?
The age at which symptoms begin and the gene type help predict the course of the disease. This is a small study. Your pediatric nephrologist will decide how often follow-up is needed.
