International study of 658 patients with ARPKD: a score predicting kidney risk at two months of age developed
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
In a study led by Germany, with centers from Türkiye also taking part, up to 658 patients with ARPKD were studied. The likelihood of developing kidney failure by age 20 was about 50%. Researchers developed a simple risk score based on five pieces of information. The score can be calculated when the baby is two months old. It predicted risk especially well in the first three years.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This score may help identify which babies need closer monitoring. It may also make it easier to select patients for future drug studies. It is not a definitive prediction tool.
