29 children with congenital nephrotic syndrome in Ankara: kidney removal reduced the burden in selected patients
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
At Hacettepe, 29 children with a change in the NPHS1 gene were studied. The median age at diagnosis was 29 days. None had the change that is common in Finland. One or both kidneys were removed in 16 children. In these children, albumin infusions, infections and hospital admissions decreased after one year.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This is a small, retrospective study. Kidney removal is not suitable for every child. The decision is made with a pediatric nephrologist (children's kidney doctor), based on the child's condition.
