40 infants with infantile spasms in Ankara: oral cortisone and ACTH gave similar results
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Gazi University studied 40 infants with infantile spasms. 23 infants received ACTH injections. 17 infants received high-dose oral cortisone. EEG findings improved in both groups. Seizure severity one year later was similar in both groups. Infants who had previously used many seizure drugs had a worse course.
What does it mean for patients and families?
Both treatments showed similar effects in this study. This is a small, retrospective study. A pediatric neurologist decides which treatment is suitable for the baby.
