72 Hirschsprung operations in Konya: botulinum injection helped most children with recurrent bowel inflammation
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
In Konya, 72 Hirschsprung patients operated on between 2011–2023 were studied. Most problems were seen in children with long-segment involvement. The frequency of bowel inflammation did not differ between surgical methods. For recurrent inflammation, 13 children received botulinum toxin injections into the anal sphincter. Episodes decreased in 11 of them.
What does it mean for patients and families?
Bowel inflammation can continue after surgery; additional treatments may help some children. This is a small, retrospective study. The choice of treatment should be discussed with the surgeon.
