In babies with galactosemia, early speech support was more effective than usual care
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Speech and language problems are common in galactosemia. In the USA, babies with galactosemia were divided into two groups, each with 22 babies. Families played daily games at home with weekly video support from a speech-language therapist. In tests at age two, both groups did better than those receiving usual care. The greatest benefit was seen in those who started before six months of age.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This is not a drug but a family-supported speech program. Seeing a speech-language therapist early may be helpful for your baby's speech development.
