In Noonan syndrome, the cholesterol drug simvastatin did not benefit growth in a phase 3 trial
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
In France, simvastatin was compared with placebo in children with Noonan syndrome. The phase 3 trial included 53 children from 13 centers. After one year, the growth hormone marker that was the main goal did not change. No difference was seen in height, bone or behavior either.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This drug is not recommended for growth in Noonan syndrome. Negative results also help in choosing new directions. Treatment decisions are made with the doctor.
