In Izmir, cornea models made from cells of patients with aniridia; two drugs tested in the lab
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Researchers in Izmir produced small cornea models from the cells of patients with aniridia. These models showed some features of the corneal problems seen in the disease. Two drugs used in other diseases were tested in these models. In the models from two patients, an important protein called PAX6 increased. The model from the third patient did not respond to either drug.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This is a laboratory study, not a treatment tested in patients. In the future, it may help with choosing drugs tailored to the individual. Treatment decisions are always made with the doctor.
