Valve as a second operation in congenital glaucoma: success declined markedly over 5 years in Ankara
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Gazi University studied the eyes of 27 children. An Ahmed valve had been placed in the eye after the first operation failed. Eye pressure fell from an average of 37 to 20.5. However, within 5 years the surgery was insufficient in 81% of eyes. These eyes needed additional laser procedures. Success dropped especially after the second year.
What does it mean for patients and families?
These children need close eye check-ups for many years. This is a small, retrospective study. The choice of surgery should be discussed with an eye doctor (ophthalmologist).
