In Kennedy disease, muscle MRI tracked muscle loss better than walking tests
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
A total of 26 adults with Kennedy disease were followed with whole-body muscle MRI every six months for up to 18 months. Within one year, muscle volume decreased and the proportion of fat in the muscles increased. This change was similar and steady in every patient. MRI proved more sensitive than walking and daily function tests.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This is not a treatment, but a study of a measurement method. It may help future drug trials see an effect in a shorter time.
