Moving to adult care in DMD in Türkiye: most patients found the preparation inadequate
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
In Türkiye, the move of young people with DMD (Duchenne muscular dystrophy) from child neurology to adult neurology was studied. The survey included 62 doctors from 28 provinces and 48 patients and caregivers. Only 18% of the doctors said their institution had a regular transition program. Of the patients who had made the move, 62% found the preparation inadequate. Most patients first heard about the move at age 17 or later.
What does it mean for patients and families?
It may help families to discuss the transition plan with the doctor early. The study was carried out to form the basis of a national transition guide.
