Single-dose gene therapy tested in 9 children with GM1 gangliosidosis type II
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
In the USA, 9 children with type II GM1 gangliosidosis were given a single dose of gene therapy into a vein. The children were followed for 3 years. In the brain fluid, the missing enzyme increased and the stored substance decreased. Some skills stayed stable, while others declined. All children had a temporary rise in liver values.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This is an early-stage study, and the treatment is not yet approved. The results need to be confirmed in larger studies.
