Most Herbal Toothpastes Fall Short on Fluoride, the Key Ingredient in Fighting Tooth Decay
A new scientific study in oral and dental health has found that many toothpastes sold on the consumer market under "natural" and "herbal" labels fall short on fluoride, the most effective ingredient for preventing tooth decay. According to the published study, a substantial share of herbal toothpastes on the market either contain no fluoride at all or contain fluoride at levels far below the clinical thresholds needed to protect tooth enamel and prevent cavities.

As part of the study, the ingredients and fluoride concentrations of numerous toothpaste brands marketed as "herbal," "organic," or "natural" were examined in detail in the laboratory. The data showed that the large majority of the products examined did not meet the minimum fluoride level of 1000-1450 ppm (parts per million) recommended by international dental associations. In some products, marked discrepancies were also found between the fluoride amount stated on the label and the actual content.

Dentistry and public health experts, while drawing attention to growing consumer interest in natural products, stress that using fluoride-free or low-fluoride products substantially increases the risk of tooth decay over the long term. Fluoride remains the key ingredient that remineralizes tooth enamel and builds resistance against acid-producing bacteria. Relying solely on herbal extracts and ignoring fluoride leaves dental health vulnerable.

Researchers and dentists say that when choosing a toothpaste, consumers should look not only at "natural" or "herbal" claims but at whether the product contains an effective level of fluoride. They emphasize that, to ensure protective effectiveness in oral care, it is vitally important to choose products with a scientifically proven fluoride level and not to skip regular dental checkups.
