130 PAP patients from Greece, Türkiye and Cyprus: inhaled GM-CSF alone also found effective
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
The 20-year records of 130 PAP patients from three countries were compared. 87 of the patients were from Türkiye. Whole lung lavage was used more often in Türkiye, and inhaled GM-CSF more often in Greece. All treatments were found to be effective. Response to treatment was lower in patients who developed lung fibrosis.
What does it mean for patients and families?
Inhaled GM-CSF may be an alternative to whole lung lavage. Diagnosis and treatment before fibrosis develops appear to be important. This is a retrospective comparison.
