200 patients with early-stage pulmonary sarcoidosis in Istanbul: the disease flared up again in about one in five
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Koç University followed 200 patients diagnosed by biopsy for up to 15 years. The disease flared up again in 18% of patients. The risk was higher in those with stage 2 disease. Flare-ups were also more common in those who received treatment at the start. The authors think this reflects the severity of the disease. The risk decreased with increasing age.
What does it mean for patients and families?
Those with stage 2 disease may be monitored more closely. This is a single-center, retrospective study. Treatment decisions are made with a doctor.
