Children with PCD at Hacettepe: lung function values lower in those with Pseudomonas in the lungs
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Hacettepe University reviewed the records of 290 patients with PCD. A total of 40 children whose lungs were persistently colonized by bacteria were studied. 10 had Pseudomonas and 30 had Haemophilus. Children with Pseudomonas had lower breathing test results. But the yearly decline was similar in both groups. Lung function decreased over time in both groups.
What does it mean for patients and families?
Pseudomonas may indicate that the disease is more advanced. Regular sputum and breathing test check-ups are important. This is a small, retrospective study.
