20 years of infection data published for 39 children with aplastic anemia in Izmir

Peer-reviewed publication

A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.

A total of 39 children with aplastic anemia followed at Ege University from 2004–2024 were studied. There were 152 episodes of febrile neutropenia in total. The most common problem was bloodstream infection. Most of these were caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Those who received rabbit-derived ATG treatment had a higher risk of bloodstream infection.

What does it mean for patients and families?

In children with aplastic anemia, fever is an emergency and needs rapid treatment. This is a single-center study, and the results may not be the same at every center.
