35 DiGeorge patients from two centers in Izmir: antibody and B cell problems are common
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
At two centers in Izmir, 35 patients were compared with 20 healthy children. Patients had lower blood antibody levels and lower vaccine antibodies. In 57% of patients, one type of memory B cell was low. Some other immune cells were also different. Autoantibodies were found in some of the patients.
What does it mean for patients and families?
In DiGeorge syndrome, immune problems are not limited to T cells. Regular immune monitoring is important; this is a small study.
