Emergency visits by children with MSUD in Istanbul: uric acid in the blood may show attack risk early
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Visits to a pediatric emergency department in Istanbul between 2016–2025 were studied. A total of 269 visits by 25 patients with MSUD were evaluated. Of these, 79 involved a severe metabolic crisis. Visits with a crisis much more often required intensive care and dialysis. Among rapid tests, the best clue was the uric acid level in the blood.
What does it mean for patients and families?
Even if the leucine result is delayed, a simple blood test may show the risk of a crisis early. This is a single-center, retrospective study. If there is a sudden change, the family should still see a doctor right away.
