Gene therapy improved hearing in 10 patients with congenital OTOF-related hearing loss
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
In a study run by the Karolinska Institutet and centers in China, 10 patients aged 1–24 years received a gene therapy delivering a functional OTOF gene into the inner ear. After six months, hearing improved in all patients; the best results were seen in the 5–8 age group. The results were published in Nature Medicine.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This treatment is only for people with a change in the OTOF gene. It is still at the research stage. This is why genetic testing is important.
