National health records: more than 160,000 people in Türkiye have FMF
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Patients with FMF (familial Mediterranean fever) in Türkiye were counted using the Ministry of Health's e-Nabız records. The study used 2018 data on people under 50 years of age. A total of 160,897 patients were found; this means 139 out of every 10,000 people. The disease was most common in Ardahan, Bayburt and Sivas. In 11.7% of children with FMF, the mother or father also had FMF.
What does it mean for patients and families?
According to the authors, FMF is common enough in Türkiye to exceed the threshold for a rare disease. If FMF runs in your family, it is important to tell your doctor about similar complaints.
