Intensive care data in babies with Treacher Collins syndrome: 103 babies studied
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
Intensive care records from children's hospitals in the USA were reviewed. A total of 103 babies with Treacher Collins syndrome were compared with other babies with a small jaw. More than half of these babies had an opening made in the windpipe (tracheostomy). Two thirds had a feeding tube placed into the stomach. The death rate, however, remained low.
What does it mean for patients and families?
Breathing and feeding support is often needed in these babies. Still, the in-hospital death rate was low. The care plan is made by a team from several specialties.
