Usher syndrome in Türkiye: type 1 and type 2 seen at almost equal rates
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
A total of 48 patients from different regions of Türkiye underwent eye and ear examinations. Of the patients, 29% had type 1 and 33% had type 2. The type could not be determined in 37%. No patient matched type 3. The same change in the MYO7A gene was found in seven families. These patients matched a type 2 form that was milder than expected.
What does it mean for patients and families?
This is a small, preliminary study. In patients in Türkiye, the link between genes and findings may differ from other countries. Talk with your eye doctor and your ear, nose and throat doctor about the type and the genetic diagnosis.
