Pulmonary artery surgery in 6 children with CTEPH in Istanbul: pressure fell markedly
A study published in a journal and reviewed by independent scientists. Even so, a single study is not conclusive; it needs to be replicated.
At Marmara University, 6 patients under 18 years of age underwent 7 operations between 2011–2025. During surgery, old clot tissue was removed from the lung arteries. Mean pulmonary pressure fell from 39 to 21 mmHg. One patient died in the hospital. The others recovered without major problems.
What does it mean for patients and families?
CTEPH is very rare in children, and this surgery may be an option for carefully selected children. The study is very small; the decision is made at an experienced center.
